Methotrexate (MTX) and Misoprostol

a. Procedure: An injection of MTX is given to the woman. It interferes with the growth of the unborn child and the placenta by blocking folic acid. A few days later, the woman takes a misoprostol suppository. The drugs may take a few days to a few weeks to work. The patient returns to the doctor for confirmation of abortion.

b. Possible Complications:

  • Nausea
  • Cramping
  • Vaginal Bleeding
  • Liver or kidney damage
